My name is Mariana Calabrese and I am currently completing the Advanced Diploma in GIS at Selkirk College. In 2013 I completed (with distinction) my BSc in Earth and Environmental Sciences from McMaster University in Hamilton. Afterwards I moved to Fernie, BC, where I had done fieldwork the previous year for my undergraduate thesis. I originally moved there to experience a ski season out west, but and ended up staying to develop roots and begin my career.
After a few years of mainly doing fieldwork revolving around water quality monitoring and parks and trail maintenance, the ADGIS program at Selkirk was an important next step in order to develop well rounded skills that I can utilize in a career in natural resource management. I enjoy the challenge of utilizing spatial tools to solve real world problems, particularly with open sourced tools and software. Using spatial data to understand and map terrain is a personal interest as well, as detailed maps are what initially inspired me to adventure into the backcountry for hikes, canoe trips, ski touring and mountain biking.
This coming summer (2018) I am enrolled in a co-op with BC Timber Sales in Nelson, BC to kickstart my career in GIS.
